Do demon hunters make New Year resolutions? Find out @scene13 @yaednah_walters, #scene13,

Twenty-eight authors with new books in 2013 have banded together to bring you teasers of their work, writing pointers and share their journey into publication. It's all happening here:

We have authors galore: debut authors, published authors and indie authors. We all support each other.

This month, we covered New Year resolutions by our characters, or us. Today is Bran's turn.
Bran is Guardian Legacy bad-boy-turn-good, so you don't want to miss it. Stop by, visit and learn more about these new releases

Where am I on my writing meter? See below. Not doing so well. Wonder why? My inner editor, you know that annoying personality that sneaks out to take over my sane and ordered writer's life (*right pinky in at the corner of my mouth*), visited me yesterday and threw my schedule out the window. Today is halfday at my kiddos school, so we'll see how far I go.

Happy New Year: more #Fitzgeralds #Guardians&demons #romance @ednahwalters http://amzn.to/ww3nEF

So what does the future hold for you? Any plans? Goals? Resolutions? I hate resolutions coz I never fulfill them. Goals are good coz you need one even if it is a tentative one.

Here is my to-do list for 2013. What do you think?
  •  Write 6 full-length books-finish the next GL book, write the next 2 Runes book (these are YA, 80,000 words), 1 paranormal adult romance (a new series,) and the next 2 Fitzgerald books (adult contemporary romance)
  • Write 2 contemporary novella
  • Save the world at least 3 times (that's what my paranormal series are about, men and women saving the world from total annihilation)
  • Find a publisher for my picture books
  • Cure world hunger one child at a time (my family is planning on supporting a child in an orphanage in Kenya, $35 a month this year)

It seems like a daunting list, but I’m at that place where I’m certain I can do all 5 things. Eight books, LOL, I'm pushing it, but hey, they say dream big, right? If I make it, I'll be Queen of the Bookdom. Will start working on one next week.

In the meantime, let me know what your plans are.

Ooh, before I forget. Winner of Mid-Winter HOP is: Holly Underhill (hope you got my e-mail)

Here’s to 2013!!!

Simon & Schuster Joins Forces With Author Solutions To Rip Off Writers

This article was originally written by David Gaughran. The article is interesting, but as always, the comments that follow are even more informative. Reblogging after informing the author.

Simon & Schuster has launched a self-publishing operation, Archway Publishing, contracting one of the most disreputable players in the business to run the show: Author Solutions.
We’ll get to that distasteful link-up in a second, but first let’s have a look at what Simon & Schuster are offering prospective customers (i.e. writers).

Fiction packages start at $1,999 and go up to $14,999. If you have written a business book, prices are saucier again: $2,999 to $24,999.

While the upper end of the pricing spectrum is obviously shocking, some of you might think that $1,999 isn’t too bad if you are getting a proper edit and a decent cover.

Not so fast.

That price tag doesn’t include any real editing, just an assessment which – according to their own website – is “not a replacement” for editorial services but “a preliminary diagnostic tool.”
But what if you need proper editing? Fear not! Simon & Schuster is here to help. For just $0.035 a word, you can have a thorough edit of your book. Which sounds cheap until you realize that a standard 80,000 word novel would cost you $2,800. So, in actual fact, the cheapest package, plus their edit, will set you back $4,799 for a standard length book.

As if that wasn’t enough, Simon & Schuster will also take half of your e-book royalties after Amazon and the other retailers take their cut – and pay pennies for print sales.

Not looking so reasonable anymore, is it.

“But wait!” I hear you cry. “Those Simon & Schuster editors might be pretty damn good.” Alas, Simon & Schuster won’t be lending any editorial expertise to this new operation; it will be run and staffed by… Author Solutions – the world famous repository of editorial talent.
In fact, the whole operation has been outsourced by Simon & Schuster to Author Solutions. In case you aren’t familiar with them, let’s go over a little history.

AUTHOR SOLUTIONS

Author Solutions is the umbrella for (and owner of) several seriously shady self-publishing service companies (or vanity presses, if you prefer) – such as AuthorHouse, Xlibris, iUniverse, and Trafford.
Each of these companies has managed to achieve disreputable status on their own, but together they have screwed over more than 150,000 writers. Going through the full history of their rip-off schemes would require a book, rather than a blog post, so I’ll stick to the highlights.
The formidable Emily Suess has been covering Author Solutions for some time:
The short list of recurring issues includes: making formerly out-of-print works available for sale without the author’s consent, improperly reporting royalty information, non-payment of royalties, breach of contract, predatory and harassing sales calls, excessive markups on review and advertising services, failure to deliver marketing services as promised, telling customers their add-ons will only cost hundreds of dollars and then charging their credit cards thousands of dollars, ignoring customer complaints, shaming and banning customers who go public with their stories, and calling at least one customer a ‘fucking asshole.’
Read the above list carefully. Take a moment to consider it. This is the company that Simon & Schuster has hired to run their self-publishing operation – a company which was purchased by Penguin in July for $116m.

If you are unfamiliar with the charges above, this post will give you a little more detail.

PENGUIN

At the time of the purchase, some commentators expressed hope that Penguin would clean up this cesspool. Instead, Penguin gave Kevin Weiss – the head of Author Solutions – a seat on the board.
A seat on the board!
And the scammy behavior hasn’t stopped; in fact, some of it is getting worse. I’ve received reports of Author Solutions staff calling prospective customers and asking if they want to be “published by Penguin.” Yes, they went there.

Then, a month after Penguin’s purchase, Author Solutions were heavily criticized for their misleading marketing strategies by Victoria Strauss of industry watchdog Writer Beware.

Aside from the usual litany of dodgy affiliate programs and misleading “independent” websites, Author Solutions had now gone a step further: using fake people to tout their services. A social media profile for “Jared Silverstone” was decked out with a stock photograph, and sent out to hustle for Author Solutions – under the pretense of recommending them independently.
Since Fake Jared’s fifteen minutes of fame, I’ve seen similar “writers” and “publishing consultants” disingenuously promoting Author Solutions companies in various writing groups on Facebook. And they’re just the ones that slip through the net – the administrator of one popular Facebook group told me that she “turns away people like this all the time.”
The latest wheeze is even better: an army of spam bots, posting comments to writing and publishing blogs, attempting to both lead people back to AuthorHouse and boost SEO. I snapped a comment from one such bot on the blog of Porter Anderson last week (which hasn’t been deleted at the time of writing).

Thank you, Author Solutions. The world really needed more spam bots.

PREDICATED ON IGNORANCE

Before you say that any writer who gets suckered only has themselves to blame, you must consider that Author Solutions is extremely disingenuous about how they target customers.
They prey on people who don’t understand the industry. Their whole business model is predicated on customer ignorance – and they are relentless at exploiting that, hounding people with incessant calls, pushing every emotional button they can think of, until they crack.
And it works. The average customer spends $5,000 getting their book published – which is crazy money – and Emily Suess has received reports of writers being tricked out of tens of thousands of dollars. After all that, the writers don’t sell anything anyway, and what little they do make is often delayed or unpaid altogether.
I can’t say it any plainer: Author Solutions are in the business of ripping people off.
That’s who Penguin purchased. That’s who Simon & Schuster hired to run their self-publishing operation. That’s who the Author’s Guild partnered with to help their members get books back in print.

150,000 writers have already been duped by Author Solutions. That number is likely to increase significantly now that Penguin has legitimized the company by purchasing them and Simon & Schuster has validated their business practices by hiring them.
Let’s make sure no more writers get ripped off.

UPDATE 29 Nov: As you can see, this post has received a lot of comments. One in particular deserves highlighting, from a writer called Khloe on her experience with Xlibris (an Author Solutions company). She says:

“They told me that with Penguin buying them they could, basically, guarantee that penguin would look at my book and because it was so good (she’d read the first couple of pages) they would definitely pick it up – the next 50 shades I was told I would be!”

This is the second such report I’ve received of Author Solutions using Penguin’s name to try and snare writers. The last person was asked (by AuthorHouse), “Would you like to be published by Penguin?” and then was offered the standard AuthorHouse packages, but with all sorts of promises about how “Penguin” would market their work.
Make no mistake, this is on Penguin. They knew what they were buying. Let’s recall the words of Penguin CEO John Makinson on the purchase of Author Solutions (ASI).

“We spent time getting to know the people at ASI and their sophisticated operation,” Makinson said. “They have skills that can help us at Penguin.”

Today, I'm happy to share the cover of Natasha Hanova's upcoming YA novel, Edge of Truth!
Citizens who report to work on time, obey the Overlord’s laws, and stay off the Synbot’s radar, live long lives. Long, dull, monotonous lives.

It’s not a bad plan for someone with a hidden, emotion-based ability to trigger earthquakes. In a world pitted against her, sixteen-year-old Rena Moon strives for a life beyond working herself to death at the factory. Seeing an alternative, she risks selling relics from the forbidden lands at Market. It becomes the worst decision she ever made. Someone kidnaps her best friend in exchange for the one thing that would end her oppression.

Driven by loyalty, Rena and seventeen-year-old Nevan Jelani, soulful composer, green thumb extraordinaire, and the secret love of her life, plot to rescue her friend and reclaim her salvage. Still, the thought lingers whether Nevan is a true hero or another thief waiting for his chance at her loot. Events spin wildly, deepening Rena’s suspicions and pushing her limit of control. With more than her chance for freedom at stake, she must decide if she’s willing to kill to protect what’s precious to her. For once, the Overlord isn’t holding all the power, but can Rena live with being reduced to what she’s trying so hard to escape?

COVER REVEAL: Awoken by Timothy Miller

Another cover reveal from Spencer Hill Press! Gorgeous, isn't it?

Fourteen-year-old Michael Stevens has never been ordinary; no orphan who hears music coming from rocks considers himself a typical teenager. But life gets a lot more complicated when two-foot-tall, albino, doll-like men sneak into his room one night, transforming the harmless music into a frightening ability he cannot control.
Soon, strangers in black suits begin to ask unsettling questions while unnatural animals with mismatched eyes haunt the streets. They are hunting, and not just Michael: anyone he cares about is in danger.
With the help of a mysterious drifter, an annoying girl he's accidentally mutated, and one of those creepy doll men, Michael finds himself in the middle of a war that could forever change the world he knows - reconstructing the very definition of humanity.

Writer's Block or fatigue

1. Do you ever feel so mentally drained you can't plot or write? That's where I'm at. I pushed myself hard to finish, polish and worked on the edits of my next romance book, Forever Hers, book #5 of the Fitzgerald Family series, and I'm totally burnt-out (burned-out). But everything is on schedule...woohoo.
Realese date is October 15th, 10 days to go....

2. Meanwhile, I have two YA WIPS I'm working on. So far I've written about 20,000 words for each of them, 60,000 to go on one and about 80,000 on the other. My problem is, I can't seem to summon strength to write for long. I write a few pages and get frustrated and move to the other.

Anything llike this ever happen to you? How do I focus on one? The last two weeks, I've just read my critique partners' WIPs to try and get out of the funk, but it's not working. I want to write these two stories so badly. I even gave myself Dec 31st deadline. Nothing is working.

Any ideas?

Woohoo, I just wanted to share this amazing cover with you! The cover of Stalked by Death, book two in the Touch of Death trilogy by Kelly Hashway.

Stalked by Death

Jodi knows that any slip-ups made by the Ophi—a special group of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac—will fall on her shoulders... and that Hades is just waiting for them to screw up so he can wipe out the Ophi line.

Unfortunately, Jodi has only convinced one Ophi to join her school: A hot guy named Chase who jeopardizes her relationship with Alex. Jodi loves Alex, but Chase can enhance her powers with just a touch—making her stronger than any Ophi has ever been.

Her mixed emotions send her powers surging out of control, and the dead start rising without her conscious summoning—exactly what Hades doesn't want! If she chooses Alex over Chase, she may lose the battle to Hades, leading the Ophi race to extinction. If she chooses Chase, she might be able to stop Hades for good… but lose everything else.

Jodi needs to figure things out fast—because death is stalking her at every turn.

Monday Madness

What a weekend.

1.      One, a dear friend of mine took my girls to Lagoon. I couldn’t go because I’m in the middle of edits and have a deadline. *sigh*  What I do for my readers.

2.      The edits are kicking my butt. I’m on the third round and I keep finding the dumbest mistakes. “That” seems to be all over the place…grrrr. It’s time for beta-readers then my editor.

3.      Today, I was supposed to officially start my new WIP and it’s not going to happen. I hate messing with my own schedule.

4.      I won Very Inspiring Blogger award, woohoo!  Thanks, Kelly Hashway.  If you don’t already follow her, you should. She’s an amazing blogger and writer.

I have to tell you 7 things about myself and pass this award to some inspiring bloggers

1.      I’m an extremely private person.

2.      I collect porcelain dolls and mermaid dolls

3.      I hate Mac & Cheese

4.      I could live on vegetable salads and cheese if I could get away with it.

5.      My dream vacation is me, alone at a secluded hotel room with internet, and my computer, so I can write my heart out.

6.      I fear heights. Somehow I always look down and imagine plunging to death then start panicking.

7.      I write both adult romance (contemporary) and YA

I’m passing this award to my girls,Katrina WhittakerCatie V and Mindy Janicke

Coming Up: Another Fast First Draft...Another Book Completed

First, have a fabulous Memorial Day weekend. We're not going anywhere or camping. Might take the kids to Lagoon, an amusement park like Six Flags though smaller. We'll see. Okay, back

1.      My Internet is down, so last night I had no access, which is torture…torture of the worst kind. Did I say torture twice? Yeah, that's how it feels whenever we don't have Internet. You see, my family ditched regular TV eons, so all our news, movies and TV-watching is done on online. But that’s not it. If I don’t stop by FB, catch up with my blogger friends, check my e-mail, listen to Jon Stewart while I work, I get very snippy. So now I’m outside my gym piggy riding on their wi-fi until the library opens.

2.      I finished cleaning up the WIP I completed two, or was it three, weeks ago. Now I’m plowing through suggestions by my CP partners. You girls rock!! Then it is off to my editor then agent.

3.      Will spend the weekend outlining my next WIP, the next Guardian Legacy book (FORGOTTEN), which I hope to start next week. This will be another fast draft. I do know what’s going to happen at the beginning of the story and the end, and some key events in between though but no idea when they’ll happen.  All I know is the characters won’t leave me alone. As I wrote HUNTED, the book with my editor right now (which they loved…no plot issues…yeah!!), I kept thinking about FORGOTTEN, so now I’m ready.

4.      I will also work on my rune book, the first in a new series. This one will be critiqued as I write…that’s my old way of doing things. You know, write a chapter and post it on my group as I continue writing. FORGOTTEN won’t be seen until it is done.

Okay, enough about me. What are you up to?

Editing Thou Art a Witch with a capital B

1. Okay, so I got the edits (HUNTED, the next Guardian Legacy book) from my amazing editor, Rich Storr, and I have to slice off about 10,000 words.... drip..drip, drip...yeah those are tears rolling down my face. But it's gotta get done. My next book, I'm so aiming for 75,000 words.  I swear.

2. I did complete the WIP I was working on in 6 weeks, so not so bad. Sorry, I was out of town and didn't blog about it. Plan to upload it so my CPs can plow through it and gut it out while I work on HUNTED. I'll probably edits both books in the coming weeks.

3. Kids are off to school next week...hooray...party time... Yeah, I know, I'm a bad mother. But after five kids, you get your yippee moments wherever you can find them and thumb your nose at anyone who condemns you with a look. Yeah, I'm talking about you reading this. Judge lest ye be judged.

4. Our shopping trip to Park City and Salt Lake City was fun but my poor visa suffered the most. We tend to go somewhere fun each summer and skipped this year...except for the few days in Vegas at the beginning of summer, which wasn't bad. We did enjoy Mistere, Bellagio water show, and Madam T's wax museum. Still my oldest wasn't with us, so it wasn't the same.

Okay, enough about me. What are you working on this week.

Tame The Editor in You While Drafting

FYI: I am participating in Summer Giveaway Hop, so if you missed it, head HERE. The giveaway is open until August 8.

I gave myself a month to finish a WIP and blogged about it on July 6th. I've had bumps in the form of a week-long computer woes and illness, days when I wanted to kick back with a glass of wine and a nice book, and hours when my 8 and 10 year had play dates and turned my house into the House of Screams. Despite all that, I plodded along.

So, where am I at one month and seven days later?

89,275 words instead of 100K I'd planned
2 and 1/2 chapters to go.
About 3 days to finish, right?
Maybe.
You see, this is exactly where I've been the last 3 days,
stuck with 2 and 1/2 unfinished chapters
What happened?

The inner editor in me happened. It usually takes me about 4 months to finish a book. I write a chapter...revise it...revise it again until I'm happy with it...upload it so my crit partners can take a whack at it...move on to the next chapter while waiting to hear from them. Steady and slow, but when I finish, it takes me less than a month to edit it.

This time, I was drafting a chapter a day, until last Friday when I  realized that for the black moment to happen, I had to fix the holes in the plot. I told myself they could wait, but alas, the editor in me took over and I've spent the last 3 days filling the bloody plot holes.

You know what happens when you stop and go over what you've written. You notice things that need fixing, weird sentences, stilted dialogues, out of character behavior... and you can't help yourself. You've got to FIX them.

So tomorrow, I'll be back on track finishing chapter 19, 20 (Wed) and 21 (Thur) because Friday morning I'm taking my kids on a a three-day back-to-school shopping trip and mini-vacation.

So the deadline is now...Thursday night. Or I'm going to be one  grumpy mom during this trip.
How do you tame the editor in you while drafting??

AnotherTwilight Fan-fic?

Do you authors write according to trends?

We all know about the success of 50 Shades of G. I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon and bash the series. To each their own. We, however, know that it was a Twilight Fan-fic. I read somewhere that the author has earned 7.3 million (since April) and has become UK Amazon bestselling book of all time and outsold the latest Harry Potter. Good for her.

Now another Twilight Fan Fic has been picked up by Penguin Imprint for seven figures... As a writer, it makes you wonder. Is it better to stay true to you and write your story or jump on the bandwagon and go with the trend?

Readers don't seem to care. Publishers want to make money and don't care.

Personally, I try not to follow trends. Why? I want to wake up in the morning and feel good about myself as a person and a writer. Maybe that's why I'm not a millionaire, hehehe.

When I started writing the Guardian Legacy series, there were no books on children of the fallen angels. But I had an idea and went with it. Then my agent started subbing it to editors and all she heard was "we've just signed up an author writing angel books...blah blah this and blah blah that."

I didn't care. I had a story to tell and will continue to write until I finish my GL series.

On a different note, it's been a mad dash to the finish, Olympic style, on my WIP. I'm totally wiped out, but what a ride. I think I'll start another WIP after I revise my present one and send it to my editor. This is where I'm at as of this morning...will start writing at 10:30.

Grace Doll @jenniferlaurens: Enjoy this amazing booktrailer

This is where I'm at with my WIP. Getting there, right?.

Today, I hit the ground running, so now I have 25 K to go. Hopefully, I 'll be done by the end of the week...lol.

Today I want to talk about my critique partner, who does such an amazing job with her covers and book trailers. Who said Indie authors don't have photoshoots for their covers.

Jennifer Laurens uses real models, does photoshoots for both her video and book covers and has a cover editor giving her exactly what she wants--an amazing cover that matches the amazing, unique story inside. If you haven't gotten a copy of Grace Doll, you don't know what you are missing. Buy it on Kindle.
And here is the trailer:

BLURB:
Grace Doll had everything a girl could want: Fame. Fortune. Beauty. Everything except her freedom. So when a powerful movie producer forces an experimental treatment on Grace--one that's purported to make beauty immortal--she stages her own death to escape him. With the help of trusted friends, Grace slips into hiding. She's forever flawless. Forever young, and forever pursued by her past. But when a stranger arrives on her doorstep, holding the key to a life she thought she'd left behind, Grace must decide between the safety she's known...and embracing the role she was born to play.

PIRACY-downloading free books hurts Authors

I'm starting Monday with a bang! Saturday night put me at 59,000words, so I'm happy.  Using the old desktop while waiting for Dell people still sucks big time. Miss my baby *clears throat*...laptop.

Meanwhile I'm trying not to think about a new book the characters are begging me to write. Don't you hate it when characters won't leave you alone when you can't afford to be distracted. Hate it!!

I'm writing the ideas for scenes down though.

Now on to my pet-peeve:

Websites that give away copies of books without an author's permission. I am a stay-at-home mother of five and writing is how I make a living. Now when my editor contacts me and tells me look what he's found, it drives me crazy.

Do you know how often we stay up late and agonize over our characters, stress over making the stories come alive for YOU, readers? A lot. Sometimes our homes don't get cleaned, our laundry goes unfolded and we live on takeouts...translate that to neglecting our families, just so we make deadlines, or because the muses are hounding us.  And how do some readers pay us, they DOWNLOAD our books for free.

FYI, these websites don't pay us a dime for these books. They haven't bought the books or a right to give them away for free or even distribute them. They may not charge you, but the more traffic generated to their websites means more companies will PAY THEM to place ads on their websites. In other words, they are making money off our sweat and readers make this possible. You ENABLE them by downloading our books for free.

Funny, if some of you e-mailed me and asked for an e-copy of my book in exchange for a review, I would send it to you. What's even worse, most of these books are only a few dollars. Some authors even sell theirs for $0.99, yet readers would rather download them for free.

Please, if you see any website selling any of my books, both adults and YA, drop me a line on FB or e-mail me. This way, my publisher can send them a warning letter to cease and desist.

For now, here is one one website... either boycot it or tell the moderators what they are doing is illegal.  FINDFREEMEDIAONLINE.COM

Thank you.

 I'm off my soap-box.
