DINNER WITH THE PARENTS

Heat crawled up my face. Sometimes he had a one track mind.

“I meant about tonight. Are you okay with it? We can postpone it for a few more months.”

He nodded and my stomach dropped. He was going to back out.

“We can,” he said slowly, “but I don’t want to. I want tonight to be perfect, so I need to do a little shopping.”

“For what? Please don’t mention a suit or dinner jacket.”

“Why not? First impression is everything.”

“I want you to be you, Echo. I want you to be comfortable. So no suit.”

He grinned. “How about you approve what I wear? Will that make you happy?”

“Yes.” The second bell went off. “Okay, I better go.”

“Kiss goodbye?”

“No. It will escalate into—”

Once again, he cut me off with his lips and I let him. How could I not? The taste of him was addictive. When he eased off, he asked, “Want a ride to class?”

I nodded, my lips tingling, his scent still filling my lungs. One fraction of a second and I was in my seat. A few nearby students glanced at me and frowned. They were probably wondering if I’d been there the entire time. Echo winked and was gone.

Hours later, I pulled up outside our farm house and glanced up at my bedroom window. At times, he’d be waiting and wave. Or he’d appeared in my car on my way home, so we rode home together and caught up on what happened at school.

Could he still be out shopping?

I thought I saw Mom by the apple trees, but on close inspection, I realized it was a soul. Word had spread fast about my work and they kept me busy, but Echo had laid down the rules, so the souls knew not to come into my house or visit me at my school. I went to them when I was ready. There was also no hostile possession. The criminals tended to be aggressive, but they knew what awaited them if they dared possess me when Echo wasn’t around.

“Something smells good?” I called out when I entered the house. Our house always smelled of freshly baked pies. Today that scent was mixed with other spices. Dad wasn’t at his usual workstation and Mom wasn’t in the kitchen. “Mom?”

No response.

I wondered if they were making out. Usually, I’d be at swim until five-thirty, but swim season ended in February. I turned on the oven light and grinned at the casserole dish cooking. Smelled like lasagna or one of Mom’s famous potato dishes.

Wondering where they were, I opened the fridge and found a bowl of washed strawberries. We grew our own, which were juicier and sweeter, but Mom must have decided to buy Californian ones from the store, which meant tonight’s dessert was probably strawberry pie or cheesecake. I took half of the strawberries in a bowl and a bowl of home-made whipped cream and started to munch.

“Hey, sweetheart?” Dad called out.

I glanced over my shoulder and grinned. He was coming down the stairs, his clothes disheveled, which meant he’d just woken up. Dad was a writer and kept odd hours.

“Hi, Daddy.”

When he reached my side, he snagged a strawberry. “How was school?”

I shrugged. “The usual. I can’t wait for summer.”

One lost love.
One lost best friend.
One hot soul reaper.

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.

“We missed you last week, Ms. Jemison,” Mr. Pepperidge, my English teacher, said, handing me a paper. “Good job on that essay. See me after class.”

I glanced down at the paper. A+. The paper was typed, had my name at the top, and was submitted two weeks ago. More proof I’d been in two places at the same time. Maybe taking psych meds had been good for me because I hadn’t received an A in English since I started high school.

The class was finishing Scarlet Letter, so I was lost and bored. I waited for the students to leave the room then approached the teacher. My heart pounding, I was sure he was going to say I was a fraud. He handed me a copy of the book.

“Read it and choose two characters or events in the story and demonstrate how Hawthorne describes them from different points of view and how this affects your impression of them. It’s nothing big, just a short essay.”

“Thanks, Mr. P.” I put the book on top of my folder.

He smiled. “I think you should seriously consider taking AP English literature and composition next year. Your writing has improved tremendously in the last month.”

“Okay, I will,” I fibbed and hurried out of the classroom.

Every class after that was the same. I’d become an exemplary student. A genius. Even math, my most hated subject. I had aced every quiz, test, and homework assignment. The handwriting on handwritten tests was mine down to the way I wrote uppercase L so it looked like the English pound sign minus the short horizontal line.

Either Echo had been right all along and I never really left until last week, or my astral projection had attended classes while I was trapped behind PMI walls. I was going with the latter because there was no way that annoying reaper could have been my lover.

After what Kicker had told me, I was feeling a little charitable toward Raine, but I wasn’t ready to be pals yet. Twice, between classes, I saw her, and each time she smiled. I ignored her, or tried to. It wasn’t easy. We’d been friends since junior high and had shared so much.

I was putting my books away before heading to lunch when she and her boyfriend cornered me. He was more striking in person than in the pictures online and had amazing blue eyes, yet something in them reminded me of Echo. Maybe it was the alertness or the edginess pulsing from him.

“Where are you going?” Ingrid asked when I started for the door.

“Home. Goodnight.”

“But you heard Andris.”

“I sure did, but that doesn’t mean I have to do as he says.” I reached for the doorknob.

She moved so fast she was by the door before I opened it. “You’re going to get me in trouble. When Torin gives an order, we follow it to the letter. You can watch TV or read something. I’ve plenty of books on my Kindle.”

“You know something? Torin is not my keeper or whatever, so I don’t have to listen or agree with everything he says.” Annoyance flashed in her eyes, and I felt bad for putting her on the spot. “Why don’t you come over to my place instead?” I heard myself say.

Ingrid’s brow rose. “What?”

“Come and hang out at my house. I have homework packets I’m still working on, but I can take a break. We can get to know each other.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Why would I want to do that?”

For one brief moment, something in her eyes reminded me of Maliina. She definitely hated me. Could she be the one vandalizing my locker? “I’m leaving. You can either follow me or stay here. That’s up to you. The invite is open.”

“Not interested. Oh, and Raine,” she added, stepping away from the door. “Just because you have everyone around here panting to turn you doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. You’re too emotional and juvenile to make a good Valkyrie. Maybe you should just do everyone a favor and tell them you’re not ready.”

Please, who did she think she was talking to?

She glared as though my face reflected my thoughts. “Don’t leave the cul-de-sac without telling me first.”

I waved and left. After her smug speech, I couldn’t wait to become an Immortal just to rub her nose in it.

“Earth to Lil Falcon...earth to Lil Falcon….”

I cringed and peered at Mr. Sorenson. He was still in front of the class, but it wouldn’t be long before he was in my face. The entire class turned to look at me.

“Do you think you can pull your attention from your doodling and answer the question?”

“What question?”

The class snickered.

Today was a really bad day to mock me. I didn’t want to do this, but…. Shut up!

Everyone stopped laughing.

Face forward.

They turned away from me and faced the board. Power of persuasion to the rescue, again. Hopefully, the amount of energy I had used was too low to be detected by our security, the Civilian Psi team, or Leather Face. I was probably already in trouble for the rescue I had pulled outside the school.

“The one we’ve been discussing at length for the last fifteen minutes,” Mr. Sorenson continued. “Would you like to answer it, or would you prefer to share the masterpiece you’re working on with the class?”

He started walking toward me. My heart dropped. I couldn’t deal with another humiliating moment at the hands of this teacher. The page in front of me had drawings of demons with bat-wings and horns, raven heads and black eyes. At the top, the name Valafar was underlined several times.

“Can you repeat the question?” I asked, closing the book.

“Why would a car traveling at a constant speed have different velocities?”

I hadn’t the faintest idea. Trying not to panic, I located Christian, the class genius, and read his thoughts. “If it is moving in a circle?”

“And why is direction important when it comes to velocity and not speed?”

No idea. Bug somebody else already.

“Come on, Miss Falcon. You must have heard something I said this morning. Or maybe if you rubbed those charm bracelets you are so fond of, the spirits might give you an answer.”

She shrugged. “That was Goddess Xenia’s way of dealing with male arrogance. She saw how our forefathers abuse their power by taking many mates. That’s why we are matriarchal.”

“So do you have someone in mind for a mate?” I asked tentatively.

Kim bit her lower lip, and for a brief moment I was sure she wouldn’t respond.

“Why don’t you go for a swim too instead of interrogating me?” she said.

“Nah,” I said, shaking my head. I’d done enough scuba-diving. Bran and his ability to trap pockets of air under water made scuba diving quite an experience.

“Don’t want to cause a riot?” Kim asked with a mocking smile that usually bugged me. Not today though. Beach times were rare this summer and I wasn’t about to let her spoil it for me.

“What do you mean?”

“Guys act like idiots around you,” Kim said with a dry chuckle. “Bran. Sykes. The Academy students. Teachers. Even the Security Guardians here on the island.”

Bran and Sykes, yes. “Come on.”

“Haven’t you noticed how they stare when you walk by, look for a reason to talk to you? The teachers think you are adorable. It’s quite…annoying. Everyone knows you and Bran are together.”

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“St. James is throwing a swim party tomorrow at his place and they,” he nodded toward the corner where Maliina and Ingrid were charming mostly guys, “are throwing one, too. They have a pool; he doesn’t.” Eirik grinned. “Can’t wait to see how this plays out.”

From the large group of girls surrounding Torin, Maliina and Ingrid didn’t have a chance of luring more students to their party. Guys tended to go where the girls were. Andris was still missing since the fight with Torin, so he’d be no help. Where had the silver-haired Immortal disappeared to anyway?

My eyes met Torin’s, and my stomach contracted. His expression was hard to read. I hadn’t spoken to him since the closet fiasco, and I felt like crap. It was as though a part of me was missing. As though someone had carved a hole inside my chest and every day it expanded.

He, on the hand, seemed to be enjoying himself with Jess. They were inseparable. He didn’t attend any of my other classes except math, but she always walked him to class. I had tried to keep from staring at them, especially during lunch, but like someone compelled, I always did. Each time, I’d find him staring at me. Part of me longed for him, wished I was with him, while another part knew it was better this way. I only hoped the pain would lessen with time.

I didn’t see him at home either anymore, except for the purr of his Harley as he came and went. Every time, I wondered whether he was going to Jess’ place or if he had been with her. At least he hadn’t taken her to his place. That would kill me.

As if dealing with the two of them that wasn’t bad enough, there was Maliina. Every time I turned around, she was watching me, waiting. Sometimes I wanted to yell at her to do her worst. Maybe then Torin would come to my rescue and my self-imposed exile would end.
