SEVEN SPARKS OF YA

IN THE FALL OF 2014, SEVEN YA AUTHORS BANDED TOGETHER TO HELP SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THEIR BOOKS, AND THE SPARKS WERE BORN!

I recently became one of the sparks when one of the originals had to step down.
Our mission is to help readers of adventurous, fantastical, romantic stories with strong heroines find our books. We Seven Sparks authors provide compelling reads without explicit descriptions or swearing, making our books perfect for the younger YA reader or anyone in the mood for a fantastical adventure!
Seven Sparks BannerTo help in that mission, we’ve created a fun and interactive Facebook page with something exciting happening on it EVERY DAY of the week!
Fandom Monday: Terah Edun inspires us with her weekly young adult TV and movie reviews and recommendations. You’ll want to look for these on Netflix!
Teaser Tuesday: Cidney Swanson bedazzles us with amazing teasers from books by the Seven Sparks and by other authors we love. These will SPARK your imagination and help you to build your TBR list!
Win on Wednesdays: Allie Burton brings the excitement with a weekly giveaway. This will be a fun way to spend hump day. Enter to win each week!
Throwback Thursday: Anthea Sharp stirs up the nostalgia by presenting older YA books we all love.  A different book will be featured each week. If you’ve read it, be sure to join in on the conversation about it!
Freebie Friday: Ednah Walters features a free ebook that meets the Seven Sparks’ criteria for excellent clean adventures for young adults. Be sure to check the page on Fridays to download your FREE copy!
Weekend Trivia: Eva Pohler (that’s me) will test your knowledge of some of our favorite young adult books (beginning with ours) and the lore that inspired them. I’ll post the question on Saturday and the answer on Sunday. A list of the names of those who commented with the correct answer will be touted all over social media. Those names will also be entered into a monthly drawing. The FIRST person to comment with the correct answer gets entered into the drawing FIVE times. The winner will be announced on the last Sunday of each month.
Brenda Hiatt will be posting fun stuff throughout the week, just to keep things REALLY interesting!

Meet the Seven Sparks…

Growing up on fairy tales and computer games, Anthea Sharp has melded the two in her award-winning, USA Today bestselling Feyland series. She now makes her home in the Pacific Northwest, where rainy days and cups of strong black tea fuel her writing. When not imagining new stories, she hangs out in virtual worlds, plays the fiddle with her Celtic band Fiddlehead, and spends time with her small-but-good family. Explore her world and the magic of her award-winning series by visiting her website.
Terah Edun is a young adult fantasy writer born and raised in the Atlanta metropolitan area, who transplanted to the Northeast region for college, and has spent years living abroad in South Sudan and Morocco. She writes the stories that she always loved to read as a young girl. She prefers tales of adventure, magic, fellowship and courtship – in other words fantasy of both the contemporary and high variety.  Terah’s Courtlight series was featured on the USA Today Happily Ever After Blog and her Crown Service series hit the Amazon Top 500 on release of Book One. She has sold over 50,000 copies of her books and is proud to be a young adult author. Discover her world and the magic of her books by visiting her blog.
BHBeachShot
Brenda Hiatt is the New York Times bestselling author of twenty novels (so far), including traditional Regency romance, time travel romance, historical romance, and humorous mystery. She is as excited about her STARSTRUCK series as she’s ever been about any of her books, which is saying something! In addition to writing, Brenda is passionate about embracing life to the fullest, to include scuba diving (she has over 60 dives to her credit), Taekwondo (where she is currently pursuing her 3rd degree black belt), hiking, traveling, and reading, of course! You can find out more at her website.
Allie Burton
Bestselling author Allie Burton’s stories rock with adventure and romance. From real places to made up worlds, from first love to united souls, from suspense to fantasy…but always to the tune of love. Her tales take you under the ocean in the Lost Daughters of Atlantis series and through mythical legends and relics in the Soul Force series. Allie currently lives in Colorado with her husband and teen inspirations. You can learn more about Allie and her books on her website.
Cidney Swanson
Cidney Swanson is an award-winning writer of Young Adult Sci-Fi and Fantasy including The Ripple Trilogy and The Saving Mars Series. SAVING MARS (Kirkus, starred) was named to Kirkus Reviews’ Best of 2012 and was an honor book for the SCBWI Spark Award 2014. When she’s not writing, Cidney is distracted by shiny things such as books with raised foil covers, macarons in jars, and stars set against an inky night sky. She lives in Eugene, Oregon with her husband, three kids, two cats, and entirely too much rain. Please check out her website.
USA Today Bestselling author Ednah Walters writes about tortured heroes and the women who love them–from her international bestselling Runes series, which focuses on Norse mythology and legends, to her Guardian Legacy series. Whether she’s writing about Valkyries, Norns, and Grimnirs, or Guardians, demons and Archangels, love plays a crucial part in her series. When not writing YA books, she writes contemporary romance under the pseudonym E. B. Walters. You can visit her online, including her websites—www.ednahwalters.com and
Eva Pohler is the Amazon bestselling author of The Gatekeeper’s Saga and The Vampires of Athens Series, both young adult adventures where Eva’s obsession with Greek mythology, epic battles, and heart-breaking love triangles lights the pages on fire. She’s also the author of The Purgatorium Series, a young adult psychological thriller and island survival story, and The Mystery Book Collection—a group of suspense novels for adults. When she’s not writing herself, Eva teaches writing and literature at a university in San Antonio, where she lives with her husband and three teens. You can learn more about Eva and her novels at her website.
You can show your Seven Sparks spirit by wearing our badge on the sidebar of your blog. Look to your left to my sidebar to see how pretty it looks.

Banned books Week!!! Dare to Read #Runes #Immortals by @yaednah_walters, magical runes/Norse mythology

Thanks to BookHounds or Kathy’s blog I am a Reader for hosting this blog hop

Today I took my daughters to the library to borrow some books and our librarians had placed the file of banned books right by the circulation desk. you guys, rock!!!

I explained to my girls about banned books and how minor things can be used to challenge a book or ban it from the library. From books that descriminate against people of a certain nationality, race to sexual orientation to those that some parents and society police think will turn their children to pagan religions.

My series, Runes, features Norse pantheon-the gods and goddesses of Norsy mythology. There is runic magic and beliefs that some might find objectionable.

I say phooey. Books expands our horizon and makes us think.

Read, rejoice and celebrate the power of books.

Immortal Tour Stop and Giveaway and SURPRISE teaser: Amazon bestseller series Runes (book 1), Immortals (book 2) #mustread #YAlit

Book Title: Immortals
Series: Runes
Author: Ednah Walters
Release Date: August 5th2013
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Length: 342 Pages
Publisher: Firetrail Publishing

Okay, I'm blown away by readers' response to this series. You've put my name out there and I can't thank you enough. I promise not to disappoint you and will continue churning out these amazing stories.  So, instead of posting an excerpt on Torin's POV, expect to see it in its entirely in the Immortals Special Edition paperback (Coming soon):

Instead, I have a surprise for you, two excerpts. One is from GRIMNIRS, the next Runes book (Release date TBA): (Surprise Julia Hendrix and Jeannette Whitus, bet you didn't see this coming)

EXCERPT 1

The woman reached up to stroke the cashier’s hair, but her hand went through his head and dropped to her side, tears filling her eyes. Another ghost. I averted my eyes so she wouldn’t catch me watching her.

Whoever created Casper the Friendly Ghost got it wrong. Ghosts weren’t white blobs floating aimlessly around and helping people. Neither did they flicker like holograms on a drug trip. They looked real like regular humans. No gaping wounds and half-chopped limbs. They weren’t even freaking transparent.
I focused on helping Mom with the groceries. I picked cans and bottles from the cart and put them on the moving counter, but I could still see the crying ghost from the corner of my eye. I didn’t want to feel sorry for her or care. Why couldn’t they just move on already? I stole a glance at her again and caught her eyes on me.
Please don’t talk to me… Please, please, please, don’t talk to me…
The month I’d spent in a psyche ward was enough. I was never ever going back. Psych ward had the most annoying ghosts. They were crazy alive and crazier dead. My heart pounding, I looked down.
This ability to see ghosts was a curse. A big, fat, ugly curse I was struggling to deal with and failing miserably. I still didn’t know how or why I could see dead people. All I knew was that it started three months ago the night lightning hit the pool during a swim meet and killed my friends. A few of us had survived, but something happened to me that night. I actually saw my friends’ ghosts and the angelic, glowing beings who’d led them away. My mistake was telling my parents. That was how I ended up in the psych ward.
I shivered again and rubbed my arms.
“Are you cold?” Mom asked.
I gave her a tiny smile. “A little. I should have brought a jacket.”
Mom started to shrug off her coat.
“No, Mom. I’m fine. Really,” I added when she shot me a skeptical glance.
“Okay. Should we have tacos for dinner tonight?” she asked.
I didn’t care. I just wanted to go home. Not that the ghosts left me alone there either. But at least I had the means to get rid of them.
“Or maybe lamb chops and potatoes,” Mom added, her voice upbeat.
I loved Lamb chops and she knew it. She was trying to butter up before hitting me with the bad news. I’d overheard her and Dad discuss me this morning. They wanted me homeschooled. Who was homeschooled in their junior year of high school? They might as well write ‘freak’ on my forehead.
I mean, seeing ghosts made me a freak already. No need letting the entire world know by homeschooling me after I’d already spent a year and a half in high school. I hadn’t minded being homeschooled when I was younger. Never even found it strange that my parents had a problem with me, their only child, attending Kayville Elementary School where they taught.
No, I planned to finish high school like a normal person. Screw the ghosts. They were not stopping me from living a normal life. I’d already missed five weeks of school because of them, a month of that in Providence Mental Institute. If anyone at my school knew about PMI, my life would be over.
My eyes drifted to the ghost. She was still staring at me. I glared back this time, daring her to talk to me. Not that that ever stopped them.
She smiled and I baced myself. I knew what was coming.

Excerpt from OVERBOARD, New adult book (Release date TBA):

Hot body alert!
Oh no, it was the guy from the balcony. One look at that ass and I’d recognize him anywhere. Looked better au naturel though. He leaned down and pressed a kiss on the blonde’s cheek. I tried to avert my eyes, but like last night, I couldn’t look away. He had the hottest body I’d ever seen on a man.
He turned and my heart stopped.
Good Lord, he was even more beautiful in daylight. Younger too. Somehow I’d assumed he would be in his late-twenties, but he looked younger. Early twenties perhaps? Our eyes met and my breath caught. Full, sensual lips lifted in a half-smile as though he knew I’d been staring at his ass. And drooling. And remembering last night.
He started toward me, his stride purposeful, broad shoulders, narrow hips, and powerful legs deliciously wrapped in designer jeans. He had to be six-three or four, which was tall for little five-six me. The black T-shirt spread taut over his broad shoulders and hinted at the rock-hard six pack I’d glimpsed last night.
His medium-length dark hair was thick and wavy, but his most striking feature was his eyes. They were so pale they looked silver. Throw in the strong chin and chiseled jaw, and high cheekbones and you had a man who could easily grace the covers of any fashion magazine.
He skirted around tables and people, his eyes not leaving me. Every instinct in my body told me to look away, ignore him, but like last night, I couldn’t look away.
“Excuse me, miss,” a man said behind me and I realized I’d been rooted on the same spot in a crowded restaurant. How humiliating.
“Sorry.” I whipped around and scooped the first offering on the buffet. Eggs. He was right behind me. I couldn’t explain how I knew. I just did.
“It tastes like crap,” he said in a smooth, deep voice, the effect on me startling. Something primal scuttled under my skin. I shivered.
“I love crap,” I said and reached for the bacon.
“Greasy,” he said.
I wanted to turn around and order him to leave me alone. I had enough crap dealing with one man who wanted my body at a crazy price without dealing with another messing with my head.
“Let me buy you breakfast and a decent cup of coffee,” he said, his voice dropping an octave. The timbre of his voice was sinfully seductive.
I wanted to continue ignoring him, but I had to make it clear that I wasn’t going anywhere with him. I turned and looked into eyes so full of raw sensuality my jaw dropped. Holy crap, how do women let him walk down the street without attacking him? Up close, those silver babies were lethal.
His brows shot up. “Is that a yes?”

OKAY: Sorry for spoiling the tour, but I had to share these teasers .

What Torin is goes back to an ancient mythology and Raine is somehow part of it. Not only are she and her friends in danger, she must choose a side, but the wrong choice will cost Raine her life.

TEASER:

I staggered backwards, needing to put space between us, so scared I could hardly think. Pain shot up my arm. I looked down, trying to find its source, and saw the knife protruding from my shoulder. It was a replica of the one Torin had pulled from his chest. Maliina must have thrown both knives at the same time. Weird, I hadn’t seen the knife sail toward me or felt the pain when it pierced my skin. I’d been focused on Torin.

Tears rushed to my eyes, and wooziness washed over me. I hated the sight of blood, even though only a blot of red discolored my light-blue top.

“Easy, Freckles,” Torin said calmly. “Let me remove it.”

My head whipped up. “No. Touch me and I’ll scream.”

“Don’t,” Torin warned. He spoke with the authority of someone who was used to giving orders, and I found myself obeying and hating myself for being scared of him. What had Maliina meant by ‘he marked her’?

“I just want to help you,” Torin added softly.

“No. You’re crazy.” I shuffled away from him. I glanced at the others. Ingrid cradled Maliina in her arms while Andris etched runes on her arm. “You’re all crazy.”

Torin smiled. “Come on, Freckles. You know we’re not. We are… different. That’s all. Let me remove the knife, so the wound can heal.”

Then, a silver elf pushed his way into Sara's dream, and her life became anything but ordinary.

Jennifer Allis Provost is a native New Englander who lives in a sprawling colonial along with her beautiful and precocious twins, a dog, a parrot (maroon bellied conure, to be exact), two cats, and a wonderful husband who never forgets to buy ice cream. As a child, she read anything and everything she could get her hands on, including a set of encyclopedias, but fantasy was always her favorite. CHAPTER ONE, Part I

It seemed like a good idea at the time.

My office, like most modern offices, cranked the air conditioning down to Arctic proportions during the summer months. Consequently, we workers arrived in the morning dressed in sandals and sleeveless tops, donned heavy sweaters upon reaching our desks, and ended up shivering by noon. Ironically, when our workday ended we were hit by a wall of oppressive heat the moment we stepped outside the main doors. No, this wasn’t a flawed system in the slightest.

That day, I wasn’t having it. I had the grand idea of spending my lunch hour outside, away from the icy wind stiffening my fingers and chilling my neck. After I unwound myself from the afghan I kept in my desk (and only used in the summer months), I gathered up my lunch and my phone and headed out for an impromptu picnic in my car.

What I hadn’t considered was that the office runs the air conditioning so cold because it was, well, hot outside. Very hot, in fact. So hot that the cheese was melting in my sandwich and the lettuce looked like something that had washed ashore months, maybe even years, ago. I was parked in the shade and had taken down my car’s convertible top, but I still couldn’t manage to get comfortable. I’d already shed my sandals and cardigan, which left me wearing my sundress and…

Dare I?

I glanced around the parking lot of Real Estate Evaluation Services, the ‘go-to firm for all your commercial real estate needs’, according to the brochures. No one, human or drone, was taking a noontime stroll, and, by virtue of my being on the far side of the lot, no cars were near mine. Most of my coworkers didn’t even have cars, so the lot was rarely more than half-full. What was more, from where I sat, I couldn’t even see the office.

I dared.

I took a deep breath and channeled my inner wild woman, then leaned the seat back and slipped off my panties. Removing that small bit of cotton made an incredible difference, and the heat became somewhat bearable. Enjoyable, even. Was that a breeze?

Ignoring my decrepit sandwich, I fully reclined the seat, set the alarm on my phone, and closed my eyes. A nap. Now that would make today bearable.

Suddenly, he is there.

Here.

Kissing me, holding me.

I know I'm dreaming, because he's perfect. His lips are soft but insistent, his hands gentle. I glide my fingers across his back, feeling thick cords of muscle, before sinking my fingers into his hair. It’s superfine, like cobwebs, and when I crack an eyelid, I learn that it’s silver. Not gray or white, but the elegant hue of antique candlesticks and fine flatware. Cool.

I squeeze my eyes shut again, not wanting the dream to end any sooner than it has to. He kisses me once more, and I can’t help melting against him. His hand travels up my leg, up past my hip… shit! No panties!

I try twisting away, but he already knows. I feel his mouth stretch into a smile, and he moves to nuzzle my neck. "What’s your name?" he murmurs.

"Sara," I reply. "Yours?"

"Micah." By now, his hands have traveled to my waist, and he slides one around to stroke the small of my back. "Why did you summon me, Sara?"

"I didn’t," I protest. "I don’t know how." I would say more, but he nibbles a trail from my neck to my shoulder, and pushes my dress to the side. As for me, I let him.

Micah raises his head, and I get a good look at him for the first time. His eyes are large and dark gray, like thunderheads, his features chiseled into warm caramel skin, and his unruly mop of silver hair seems to float around his head. He wears an odd, buff-colored leather shirt, made all the odder in this heat, and matching leather pants and boots. Boots?

"You did summon me," he insists. "My Sara, you must tell me why."

"Does it matter?" I ask. I pull him back to me, kissing him with all the passion I’ve never felt with anyone during my waking hours. Micah kisses me back, fingers deftly unbuttoning my dress while his other hand rubs my lower back. I’ve never felt so free, so alive as I do in Micah’s embrace, and I have no intention of rushing this. None at all.
